Introductions

Hi, I’m Kate…

In 2014, 74% of adults used social networking websites, and the percentage continues to grow.  This blog will explore some of the ways social media is shaping, and is being shaped by, culture and society.  The posts will include examination of theoretical frameworks and methodologies, and will be based around the contents of the Social Media as Culture module, part of the Birmingham City Social Media MA.

Although I have a background in English Literature and Film, for the past few years I’ve used social media to promote student engagement and have gradually become interested in both the marketing potential of social networking sites and the cultural impact of our changing communications.  With that in mind, I hope this blog will reflect my own journey as I continue to learn more about this fascinating area of study.
